Data centre power distribution

Rack densities have moved from 5–15 kW to 60 kW and beyond, and the busway feeding them has to be fabricated to match.

Rack power density has moved from a 5 to 15 kW baseline to 60 kW and beyond for AI-optimised racks, and overhead busway has largely displaced cable tray at those densities because it is denser and can be reconfigured. For a fabricator that shows up as three things: more joints per run, tighter joint-plane tolerance because the joints are carrying more current, and plating specifications that were once optional becoming standard. Joint ratings of 400 A and above continuous are now routinely specified. None of this changes the process; it raises the tolerance and the traceability the process has to hold.
