IS/IEC 61439-2

Indian low-voltage assembly standard

IS/IEC 61439-2 is the Indian adoption of the IEC power switchgear and controlgear assembly standard, and it supersedes IS 8623, which was itself technically identical to the older IEC 60439. The difficulty is practical rather than technical: IS 8623 continues to be named in Indian tender documents long after its supersession, so a fabricator working to Indian specifications should expect to see it referenced and should confirm which regime the customer is actually being assessed against.

If a tender cites IS 8623, ask. It is usually a copy-forward from an older document rather than a deliberate choice.
